Historic dams raid briefing model emerges

During the weekend of 22-23 September at the IWM Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, the original briefing model of the Möhne dam, used prior to Operation ‘Chastise’, was on show in the airfield’s Hangar 5. The model — which was also used in the 1955 Dam Busters film — is rarely seen in public, the last occasion being when it went out on loan to Kingston School of Art during 2015. It is incredible to think that Guy Gibson and Richard Todd studied the item before the raid and during filming respectively.

Care and conservation staff were to undertake a complete condition check on the priceless artefact before it was safely returned to the three-dimensional object store. A new storage centre for the museum’s paper-based collections is under construction at Duxford to the north of the A505 road.
