Forty years since ‘Hanover Street’ filming

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the making of Hanover Street, a movie best-remembered for the involvement in its filming of five North American B-25 Mitchells, all of which were flown trans-Atlantic to the UK in order to take part. Led by John ‘Jeff’ Hawke, the ferry flight was an adventure in itself as the veteran twin-engined bombers made the trip against considerable odds.

Hanover Street itself does not go down as a cinematic classic; the documentary film B-25… Mitchells Do Fly In IMC, however, makes for superb viewing, telling as it does the story of the Atlantic crossing. The July issue of Aeroplane, out now, contains the first half of a two-part article in which we recall one of the most intrepid exploits in the world of historic aviation with the help of Tony Howarth, whose cameras covered the trip in great depth.
